Indian doctors in UK hopeful of work

February 29, 2008

Thousands of Indian doctors were rendered jobless after the government decided to abruptly change the rules in March 2006 to give preference to European physicians in the state-run Public Health Service.

I saw the coverage on NDTV 24×7. A doctor is a doctor and I don’t think the doctor’s country of origin makes a difference. The responsibility of curing ailing patients doesn’t change.

Indian doctors in UK have said they were ”quietly optimistic” on a favourable verdict from the House of Lords, a day after it heard an appeal by British Department of Health over its directive on employment of overseas medics.

DirecTV is doing a great job of providing NDTV 24×7 in the US as it is the only channel in the US to cover India-centric news extensively.

Regal beauties

February 25, 2008

A fleet of regal beauties took to the streets of Mumbai in a nostalgic journey from the heart of South Mumbai to suburban Juhu, during a vintage car rally. I wish I was in Mumbai to witness the rally. NDTV 24×7 made up for my absence, the coverage on the news channel was as good as being there.

The pride of the fleet, a 1908 award-winning Wolseley, is already miles ahead of the others as she celebrated her 100th birthday.

At hundred, she can put even the newest set of wheels to shame. A maroon and black 1908 Wolseley, rolling down the streets of Mumbai, wowed all those who turned out to watch this vintage car rally early on Sunday. Another beauty in the car rally was a blue and black 1930 Ford Roadster, which Mahatma Gandhi rode two years later after his release from jail.

It was history re-visited at the vintage car rally (coverage) on NDTV 24×7. The news channel is available in the US only through DirecTv.

Jaipur IPL team fined for under-bidding

February 21, 2008

As promised, here is an update on the current IPL bidding stage.

The Jaipur Franchise of the DLF Indian Premier League bought just eight players spending Rs 11.7 crores that is short of the Rs 13.2 crore that was the minimum that any team had to spend.

Jaipur will now be penalised and will now have to deposit the difference between the amount and the minimum they had to pay at that auction.

Thanks to NDTV 24×7 or else I wouldn’t know about IPL at all. Its a fantastic Indian news channel.

I prefer watching NDTV 24×7 as it provides up–to–the–minute, 24/7 news with unparalleled coverage of the latest in Indian and international news. NDTV 24×7 is available in the US only through DirecTv. Here is the URL for DirecTv:

Cricketers Auctioned; Dhoni, Symonds rake in millions

February 20, 2008

It’s happening cricketers are being auctioned. All the action is taking place under the purview of Indian Premiere League (IPL) and I am updated on this news by NDTV 24×7, India’s best news channel.

The first two rounds of auction are over. Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka drew the next biggest bid, of USD 975,000 from Mumbai.

Top Australian players Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist also drew some big bids. Warne was sold to Jaipur for USD 450,000 which was his base price.

Gilchrist will now be the face of the Hyderabad team, who bought him for USD 700,000.

The eight team franchise owners of the IPL will bid through the day for 77 international cricketers who are up for grabs.

A few of the early arrivals for the bidding, who arrived at the Hilton towers included Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Vijay Mallya, Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia. It’s a first of its kind, as the cricketers are auctioned off.

I will update this space as soon as NDTV 24×7 updates me further. The fantastic news channel is available in the US only through DirecTv.

India’s first 3D game making waves

February 19, 2008

I saw the coverage on NDTV 24×7 about India’s first 3D game, It’s a game where one can zip across Mumbai , a city in which speed is just a way of life.

But this is no ordinary race, this is the first three dimensional game that has versions applicable in both personal computers and on play station.

The game has been developed entirely in India, which its makers believe is just as good as the games developed anywhere else. And it’s not just this technology but also the game itself, which will appeal to hardcore gamers.

It would be fun racing alongside random constructions going on, dug up Mumbai roads, autorikshawallas who drive like a maniac and dogs chasing the cars.

I prefer watching NDTV 24×7 as it provides up–to–the–minute, 24/7 news with unparalleled coverage of the latest in Indian and international news.

The fantastic news channel is available in the US only through DirecTV.

Bring IPL to the Eden: Ganguly

February 18, 2008

Ganguly is one of my favorite cricket players. The Indian team could have avoided the defeats if Ganguly was in the current squad.

Whenever I talk to my friends from India I always have an upper hand despite the fact that I stay in the US. I owe this to NDTV 24×7 as the news channel keeps me updated about all the happenings in India.

Tiger census paints grim picture

February 13, 2008

According to the latest tiger census, released by the government on Tuesday, there has been a sharp decline in the numbers of the elegant predators.

The census says the number of tigers stands at 1411, a dramatic fall from 3600 tigers in the 2002 census.

The state wise statistics stand as follows:

  • Uttarakhand- 178
  • Karnataka- 290
  • Assam- 70
  • Rajasthan- 32
  • Madhya Pradesh- 300

Most promising tiger growth is in the Terrai region of the Himalayas, which includes Corbett, Rajaji National Park, Dudhwa and the Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar.

According to the government, the record looks as bad because the counting method used the last time was not very accurate.

This time they claim to have used the camera trap method, which identifies tigers by its stripes and then adds up the numbers.

The methodology will be debated hotly in the days ahead, but the key question is whether the government has been successful in conserving the tiger. I don’t think so, the government tried to cover up their failures by a false census.

Poaching, loss of quality habitat and prey were the main factors blamed for the dwindling numbers. Total country level population of tiger is 1,411 with variation of 17.43 per cent, the lower limit stands at 1,165 and the upper limit at 1,657.

The census has classified the tiger reserve areas into six landscape complexes namely, Shivalik-Gangetic Plains, Central Indian Landscape Complex, Eastern Ghats, Western Ghats, North-eastern Hills and Bhramputra Plains and Sunderbans- in 23 states depending on their habitats.

Meanwhile, the shrinking forest cover in Assam, where 70 of the remaining tigers live is not making the situation look any better.

The next tiger census will begin at the end of this year and the government has until then to come up with a strategy that will check the rapidly declining tiger population.

The government will now devise a strategy to conserve the tigers. What does that mean? It means that the government didn’t have any plans despite the numbers of tigers is shrinking since decades. An irresponsible approach towards a National Animal.

The rise and rise of Ishant Sharma

February 11, 2008

I saw the coverage on NDTV 24×7 about India’s win over Australia. The day belonged to Ishant Sharma, the new addition in the team.

The start hadn’t been all that brilliant. Matthew Hayden, dropped in Ishant’s first over, pinched 18 runs off his second.

But like Ishant himself said after the game, “I didn’t think about the batsman’s strengths, I stuck to mine.”
That attitude paid off. Hayden scratched one to Dhoni to get Ishant off the mark.

Then, Ricky Ponting, who has been the best batsman around for some years now, was done in – again – by one that exploded off good length and went to slip.

It brought back memories of the 1996-97 Test series in Australia when Glenn McGrath made Brian Lara look like a fool again and again through the series.

The quick wickets allowed India to settle down and helped Ishant get into rhythm. He added Andrew Symonds and Stuart Clark to his kitty. After his first two overs read 0-24, the next 7.1 read 4-14.

NDTV 24×7 is available in the US through DirecTv. The combination is very good as NDTV 24×7 is India’s best news channel and DirecTv’s signal is never down.

Podium finish in 2010. Possible?

February 8, 2008

I saw the news on NDTV 24×7 about Force India rolling out its car for this year’s 18 Formula1 races. Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil will race the cars and Vitantoniio Liuzzi will be the test-driver.

Force India, India’s entry in the 2008 Formula One World Championship, unveiled its car and team colours for the upcoming season, which begins in Melbourne on March 16.
Calling it a “red letter day in the history of Indian motorsport”, Force India owner and liquor baron Vijay Mallya unveiled the new car and the team’s three drivers dressed in the team colours of white, tungsten, gold and red at a ceremony at the historic Gateway of India in South Mumbai.

The car, called VJM01, is expected to have its first run during the next test session of the team to be held in Barcelona from February 25 to 27.

I prefer watching NDTV 24×7 as it is India’s most respected news channel and the news coverage is ‘to the point’ unlike other news channel where every news is a breaking news.

The experience only improves as I have subscribed to DirecTv.

There are absolutely no interruptions as DirecTV delivers a digital signal 99.9% of the time. I also ordered a high-speed Internet connection with the service.

The most important benefit is that my cable & internet bills have reduced.

So what do you think? Mallya wants a podium finish in the 1st race of the 2010 F1 season, Is it possible?

N-deal outstanding symbol of India’s ‘new’ standing

February 5, 2008

The Nuclear deal will always be in the news no matter what the result is. I like to be updated on the N-deal as this is a prospective big leap for India. I rely on NDTV 24×7 for developments of the deals as it is India’s best news channel.

Indo-US civil nuclear deal is now termed as ”most outstanding symbol” of the ”India’s new standing” in the world by Indian ambassador to America Ronen Sen. There is also ”complete agreement” among Russia, European and other countries about the Indo-US N-deal.

DirecTv is the only TV service provider offering NDTV 24×7 in the US. It’s doing a great job as there are absolutely no interruptions as DirecTV delivers a digital signal 99.9% of the time.
