India-born doctor’s film set for Cannes

March 28, 2008

A film produced by an India-born doctor, which questions the conservative American mindset on stem cell research, is set to be premiered at the Cannes this year.

The film is based on the novel of Dr Shelley Chawla, who practices medicine in US. His book Hope.. in vitro was released last year.

The film will be up for at MIPTV Cannes in April 08 and the Cannes Film Market in May.

A Kansas film director, Rich Ambler has directed this movie, which also stars Inder Mishra, an Indian actor who played a lawyer in ‘A mighty heart’.

Chawla’s script highlights the paradoxes of American conservatives who consider stem cell research as ”immoral”.

This film has highlighted the controversies surrounding stem cell research. I read this news on NDTV 24×7. With good voice and picture quality DirecTV makes it possible to access this channel in the US.

Tata inks JLR deal with Ford

March 26, 2008

Homegrown auto major Tata Motors has clinched the Jaguar and Land Rover deal estimated to be valued between $2-2.5 billion.

According to sources close to the development, the deal was signed last evening and is estimated to have cost the Tatas between $2-2.5 billion.

The deal has taken almost nine months to finalise as both Ford and Tata and their financiers sought to iron out issues seen as crucial to the future of the two British marques.

It is expected to cover long-term supply of engines to both brands from Ford.

During the race for JLR, in which India’s Mahindra & Mahindra was also in running for sometime, Tatas gained the crucial support from Unite – main trade union of Jaguar and Land Rover.

Tata has made India proud once again. I came to know about this news from NDTV 24×7. It is an excellent channel for NRIs that provides comprehensive coverage to news related to India. This channel is available in the US only through DirecTV.

Three Indian boxers qualify for Olympics

March 24, 2008

Three Indian boxers – Vijender, Dinesh Kumar and Jitender – booked their place in the 2008 Beijing Olympics during the Asian qualifiers in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Doha Asian Games bronze medallist Vijender (75 kg) and Dinesh (81 kg) won their semi-final bouts to qualify for the mega-event.

Jitender (51) became the latest to qualify after winning the third place play-off match against Castro Godfrey of Philippines Sunday.

With the three, the number of Indian boxers qualifying for the Olympics has gone up to five. Earlier A.L. Lakra (57kg) and Akhil Kumar (54kg) ensured their berths.

Thus, the channel is a must for Indians living abroad who want to stay abreast with latest happenings in India. The incisive news channel is available in the US only through DirecTV.

‘Nano’ trial production to start by July

March 20, 2008

My first post in this blog was about the news coverage on NDTV 24×7 about the revolution in Indian small car segment. Tata Motors showcased Nano on January 10 at an auto show held in Delhi.

NDTV 24×7 was the first news channel to break this news to me. Now, I saw the news about TATA’s plans to produce 2.5 lakh units of Nano from Singur on NDTV 24×7.

Trial production of Tata Motors’ Rs one lakh wonder ‘Nano’, which was unveiled at the auto-expo in the national capital last month, would start in June or July.
Within two months of start of trial production, commercial production of the small car would begin in the second half of the next financial year, preferably in October.

A number of auto component manufacturers are also geared up for their manufacturing units near the plant area for the small car.

I think NDTV 24×7 is a must for all the Indians living in the US. It is the only news channel available in the US covering India-centric news extensively. The channel is available on DirecTV. The satellite TV service provider is a class-apart. My experience with DirecTV & NDTV 24×7 has been indeed a pleasant one.

I’m worried

March 19, 2008

Sania Mirza is worried over her recurrent wrist injury as it could either result in a surgery or require her to change her grip and action, an idea she is not keen on at this stage of her career.

Sania, who played in pain before losing out to Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in the Pacific Life Open pre-quarters here yesterday, said she would try to avoid surgery but was also not keen on changing the way she grips the racket at the crucial stage in her career.

The only female tennis player in India to rub shoulders with the legends can’t get misery off her back. I saw the news on NDTV 24×7, it’s the only channel to cover Indian Sportsmen-women extensively. That makes the channel a must for Indians in the US.

“Usually it doesn’t get this sore, so I’m a little worried right now. It gets sore and then it gets OK when I ice it and do whatever I have to do”

Sania had suffered the injury after US Open Grand Slam last year, which had also forced her to withdraw from her home WTA event.

I will keep you updated as NDTV 24×7 updates me on Sania’s wrist injury.  The news channel is available in the US through DirecTV.

Overwhelming response to NDTV’s tiger campaign

March 17, 2008

My favorite news channel had initiated a campaign to protect my favorite animal, tiger. After receiving nearly five lakh signatures on Save Tiger campaign from all over the country, the petitions will be handed over to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and chief ministers of states.

The response to NDTV’s Save the Tiger Campaign, supported by Sanctuary Asia and Kids for Tiger, has been overwhelming. Even a week after the rallies held across the country, people continued to sign the petition.

A remarkable 4,97,944 people came forward to sign the petition. The signatures will be submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

It has been little over a month since the government came out with the latest tiger census. According to the government’s latest census, there are only 1411 tiger left in the wild, 50 per cent down from 3642 in 2001-02.

The figure was an acknowledgment of the fact that tigers in India are in serious danger. Following this, NDTV carried out a campaign to raise awareness and make people put pressure on the government to be more vigilant.  The aim of NDTV’s public campaign is that leaders and politicians should see the urgency of the problem and declare an emergency for the tiger and save the national animal from extinction.

The news channel that cares for the society and is the first to cover India-centric & International news is available in the US only through DirecTV.

Royal welcome awaits Team India

March 6, 2008

The battle has been won and the warriors are back.

NDTV got exclusive access to the Indian cricket team on their flight from Melbourne to Mumbai. NDTV 24×7 is a boon for Indias living in the US.
The exhausted players were catching up on some much needed sleep, after a grueling 84-day tour Down Under.

The new-age Indian team proved most pundits wrong, wrapping-up the series with a comfortable 2-0.

A lot of credit has rightfully gone to Captain M S Dhoni, considering his fearless team selection and the immense faith he displayed in the young side.

NDTV 24×7 is a must for Indians residing in the US. The incisive news channel is available in the US only through DirecTV. For more information visit the Squidoo Lens.
