Jubilant Mumbai Indians upset Delhi Daredevils

May 5, 2008

The Mumbai Indians finally did it on Sunday evening and achieved their second win of the DLF Indian Premier League as they thrashed the Delhi Daredevils by 29 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. So far, this is the biggest upset of the tournament. The lowest placed team in the IPL table dethroned the Daredevils from the top spot.

Defending a total of 162 runs on a flat wicket of DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai Indians knew they had to come off good with the ball and their bowlers did not disappoint them. Delhi Daredevils, for the first time in the tournament, were all out while chasing.

Stand-in captain Shaun Pollock led from the front and lived up to his reputation of a terrific all-rounder. His captaincy deserves special accolades too, as he put in all his international experience to the hilt and shepherded his side to win. He, undoubtedly, was the Man of the Match.

Bhajji pleads guilty, banned for 11 IPL matches

April 28, 2008

NDTV 24×7: Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has been banned for 11 matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) following his spat with Sreesanth at the end of Mumbai Indians’ match against Kings XI Punjab on Friday. It would effectively end Bhajji’s stint in the first edition of the IPL – unless Mumbai make it to the semi-finals, which looks highly unlikely at this point.

Harbhajan also faces separate action from the BCCI, which has asked him to explain, “as a contracted player”, his role in the incident which came to light after Sreesanth broke down in front of the cameras.

Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, said on Monday that Sudhir Nanavati, a lawyer, has been appointed to conduct a “preliminary inquiry” and submit a report “within 15 days” to Sharad Pawar, the BCCI president, who will refer the findings to the board’s disciplinary committee for possible action.

This is a totally uncalled for controversy to hit IPL. I hope it sorts itself out and we can get back to the game.

I saw a report on this issue on NDTV 24×7 which is available here in the US only on DirecTV.

Tendulkar vs Warne, once again

April 17, 2008

Sachin Tendulkar said he was looking forward to the challenge of leading Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League starting on April 18.

Some quotes from the interview:

On leading the Mumbai side

It is going to be a challenge. I was not expecting to captain the Mumbai side. Mukesh Ambani spoke to me and he wanted me to lead the side. I have accepted it and I am looking forward to it. I’m happy to be opening the innings with Sanath Jayasuriya. I excited about renewing rivalries with Shane Warne.

On talks that Mumbai is one of the weaker teams in the IPL

I am happy with the team. It has nice blend of seniors and juniors, it is a terrific team. Who says we have a weak side, let the tournament start and everybody will know. The IPL is a great opportunity for youngsters to play with international stars.

On having Harbhajan Singh in his team

Harbhajan Singh is a world class player, I am happy that I have got him. Anybody who has played for more than 10 years for his country should be a terrific player.

On playing against players like Ganguly, Dravid and Dhoni

It will be a strange experience, playing against somebody who are next to me in the dressing room. It is a club system, it will be a new experience. It will be exciting for players as well as spectators.

I’m very excited about IPL. It will certainly be very exhilarating to see Sachin battle Warne once again. I’m expecting the same fireworks as before.

Fisichella 2nd fastest in Barcelona test

April 16, 2008

Fisichella 2nd fastest in Barcelona testNDTV Reports: Giancarlo Fisichella outshone the likes of Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton to conjure up yet another impressive timing that placed him second fastest in the second day’s testing at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Though Fisichella posted his best time on 2009 ‘slick’ Bridgestone tyre option, he proved quick on the grooved rubber too and managed a more representative time of 1m 20.7s to demonstrate the Silverstone-based outfit’s rapid progress.

This was a marked improvement from the team’s previous fastest lap round in Barcelona this year — a 1 min 22.233, was set by Giancarlo in February. The same circuit will host the fourth Grand Prix of the season on April 27 and the strong show here would boost the Vijay Mallya-owned team’s morale.

Way to go Force India… This is really good progress from the last race. I get excellent sports coverage every night at 10.30 on NDTV 24×7. It is available on DirecTV here in the US.

A1 catching up with F1: Karthikeyan

April 14, 2008

https://i0.wp.com/f1.dancewithshadows.com/india/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/narain.jpgFor motor sports enthusiasts, Formula One may be the Real McCoy but ace Indian driver Narain Karthikeyan believes A1 Grand Prix’s six-year deal with Ferrari will throw a real challenge to F1.

Here for the penultimate Grand Prix of the season at the Shanghai International Circuit this weekend, Karthikeyan said A1 GP was catching up with the F1 race and would gain more popularity in the years to come.

Karthikeyan said A1 GP’s unique format of pitting a country against other countries and the deal with Ferrari would herald a new era for motorsport in a country like India.

Top drawing CEOs in US include three NRIs

April 9, 2008

NDTV reports: Three Indian Americans are among the 200 CEOs of large public companies who received an average of over $ 11 million compensation in 2007. Besides Indra Nooyi and Vikram Pandit, Rajiv L Gupta of Rohm and Haas is one of them.
Top drawing CEOs in US include three NRIs
Gupta’s package was $ 7.3 million, cash pay being $ 2.8 million, according to the CEO pay tabulated on Sunday by The New York Times based on the company reports.

Muzaffarnagar-born, IIT educated Gupta took over as chairman and CEO of the Pennsylvania-based chemicals multinational in 1999.

For Nooyi, chief of PepsiCo, the total annual package was $ 14.7 million, with a cash pay of $ 4.9 million, stock awards and option awards making up the rest.

Pandit, who took over as chief of Citigroup only in last December, received a total of $3.2 million, out of which a huge chunk of $ 2.9 million was in stock awards.

The highest compensation – a whopping $ 84 million – went to Johan Thain, chief of Merrill Lynch, while Rupert Murdoch of News Corp took home $24 million.

Steven Jobs of Apple chose to take only a token $1. Even the richest man in the world, Warren Buffett, took only $ 175,000 from his company, Berkshire Hathaway.

Kudos to all the Indian Americans who have made their community and their home country proud. It feels really good to see learn about such successes if NRIs. SA batsmen begin confident reply to India’s 76

April 4, 2008

India made an embarrassing start to the Ahmedabad Test. The team folded up for 76 runs in just 20 overs – all in the first session of play against South Africa on Wednesday.

South Africa’s openers replied positively. Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie erased the deficit in the second session of play before Smith fell leg-before to Sreesanth for 34.

Irfan Pathan, brought in for the injured Sachin Tendulkar, top-scored for India with 21 as Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini and Morne Morkel wreaked havoc

Sehwag betters Dravid, Sachin in ranking

April 2, 2008

Virender Sehwag’s career best 319 against South Africa catapulted him to the 12th spot in the ICC Test Rankings, making him the highest ranked Indian in the batting chart. I saw the news on NDTV 24×7.

Sehwag, whose triple ton was the fastest in Test history, jumped 13 places to 12th spot after a massive 17 per cent rise in his rating that saw him leapfrogging compatriots Rahul Dravid (13th), Sachin Tendulkar (15th) and VVS Laxman (18th).

On current form, Sehwag has a realistic chance of returning to the top 10. He is within touching distance of 10th place Kevin Pietersen of England who is just behind ninth-placed Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies.

India-born doctor’s film set for Cannes

March 28, 2008

A film produced by an India-born doctor, which questions the conservative American mindset on stem cell research, is set to be premiered at the Cannes this year.

The film is based on the novel of Dr Shelley Chawla, who practices medicine in US. His book Hope.. in vitro was released last year.

The film will be up for at MIPTV Cannes in April 08 and the Cannes Film Market in May.

A Kansas film director, Rich Ambler has directed this movie, which also stars Inder Mishra, an Indian actor who played a lawyer in ‘A mighty heart’.

Chawla’s script highlights the paradoxes of American conservatives who consider stem cell research as ”immoral”.

This film has highlighted the controversies surrounding stem cell research. I read this news on NDTV 24×7. With good voice and picture quality DirecTV makes it possible to access this channel in the US.
