Hindu Guru held for indecency in US continues with programme

May 2, 2008

A prominent Hindu religious leader with a worldwide following and a huge ashram complex in the US, who was detained on charges of indecency with minor girls, is carrying on with his scheduled programme.

Swami Prakashanand Saraswati, 79, founder of Barsana Dham, a 200-acre temple and ashram complex near Austin, Texas, was accused of groping two underage girls on several occasions between 1993 and 1996.

According to local media reports, detectives began investigating the swami, a votary of the path of devotional love, in August 2007 but indictment on 20 counts of indecency with a child or sexual contact was handed down in April.

I read this news on NDTV 24×7. This channel is excellent for NRIs for the latest news related to India. In the US this channel is available through DirecTV.

Kalam was to quit over Bihar: Book

April 25, 2008

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam left office a year ago but it seems people are still talking about his tenure.
I heard them talking on NDTV 24×7.

His senior most aide PM Nair has written a book The Kalam Effect: My Years With the President, which will be released on Thursday.

The book talks about some of the big controversies during the Presidency and indicates that Kalam was ready to quit after the whole controversy surrounding the dissolution of the Bihar Assembly.

Nair gave some juicy anecdotes about the former President, the attention he received as a bachelor.

NDTV 24×7 is a must for Indians living in the US. The news channel is available in the US through DirecTV.

Knight Riders tame Deccan Chargers

April 21, 2008

Kolkata Knight Riders carried their winning momentum from Bangalore to their home ground as they beat Deccan Chargers by 5 wickets to record their second win of the Indian Premier League at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Deccan Chargers, defending a total of 110, started off well with the ball as they had Knight Riders 21/3 at one stage. But David Hussey had other plans as he played anchor’s knock and guided his team to victory. He understood the nature of the pitch well and didn’t let his aggressive instinct take charge. However, he did hit three long sixes in the death overs to take his team closer to the target.

I catch up on news related to India only on NDTV 24×7 since it is the only channel that provides comprehensive and accurate news. People in the US can access this channel only through DirecTV.

Chak de India!!

April 11, 2008

I saw the news on NDTV 24×7 about the Indian women’s hockey team, which is en route for the Olympic qualifiers in Kazan. The men’s hockey team’s performance turned out to be a disaster, that rests the pride of the national game on the women shoulders. The movie, Chak de India had a typical ending but this the kind of result hockey followers are dreaming about.

I am not sure if the match will be shown live but I will definitely watch the coverage on NDTV 24×7.

There’s an almost frantic feel to the way the women’s hockey team is preparing for the Beijing qualifiers in Kazan. After an intense three-week training camp in Lucknow, the ladies arrived in New Delhi for a day en route to Russia, and decided to put in one more training session. The pressure is mounting after the men failed to make it to the Games for the first time in 80 years.

I will update this blog as soon as NDTV 24×7 updates me. The India-centric news channel is available in the US through DirecTV. The satellite TV provider offers an array of Indian channels in HD.

Three Indian boxers qualify for Olympics

March 24, 2008

Three Indian boxers – Vijender, Dinesh Kumar and Jitender – booked their place in the 2008 Beijing Olympics during the Asian qualifiers in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Doha Asian Games bronze medallist Vijender (75 kg) and Dinesh (81 kg) won their semi-final bouts to qualify for the mega-event.

Jitender (51) became the latest to qualify after winning the third place play-off match against Castro Godfrey of Philippines Sunday.

With the three, the number of Indian boxers qualifying for the Olympics has gone up to five. Earlier A.L. Lakra (57kg) and Akhil Kumar (54kg) ensured their berths.

It is good to know that India is performing in sports other than Cricket. NDTV 24×7 is the only channel that provides extensive coverage about all sports. Thus, the channel is a must for Indians living abroad who want to stay abreast with latest happenings in India. The incisive news channel is available in the US only through DirecTV.

‘Nano’ trial production to start by July

March 20, 2008

My first post in this blog was about the news coverage on NDTV 24×7 about the revolution in Indian small car segment. Tata Motors showcased Nano on January 10 at an auto show held in Delhi.

NDTV 24×7 was the first news channel to break this news to me. Now, I saw the news about TATA’s plans to produce 2.5 lakh units of Nano from Singur on NDTV 24×7.

Trial production of Tata Motors’ Rs one lakh wonder ‘Nano’, which was unveiled at the auto-expo in the national capital last month, would start in June or July.
Within two months of start of trial production, commercial production of the small car would begin in the second half of the next financial year, preferably in October.

A number of auto component manufacturers are also geared up for their manufacturing units near the plant area for the small car.

I think NDTV 24×7 is a must for all the Indians living in the US. It is the only news channel available in the US covering India-centric news extensively. The channel is available on DirecTV. The satellite TV service provider is a class-apart. My experience with DirecTV & NDTV 24×7 has been indeed a pleasant one.

Indian doctors in UK hopeful of work

February 29, 2008

Thousands of Indian doctors were rendered jobless after the government decided to abruptly change the rules in March 2006 to give preference to European physicians in the state-run Public Health Service.

I saw the coverage on NDTV 24×7. A doctor is a doctor and I don’t think the doctor’s country of origin makes a difference. The responsibility of curing ailing patients doesn’t change.

Indian doctors in UK have said they were ”quietly optimistic” on a favourable verdict from the House of Lords, a day after it heard an appeal by British Department of Health over its directive on employment of overseas medics.

DirecTV is doing a great job of providing NDTV 24×7 in the US as it is the only channel in the US to cover India-centric news extensively.

The rise and rise of Ishant Sharma

February 11, 2008

I saw the coverage on NDTV 24×7 about India’s win over Australia. The day belonged to Ishant Sharma, the new addition in the team.

The start hadn’t been all that brilliant. Matthew Hayden, dropped in Ishant’s first over, pinched 18 runs off his second.

But like Ishant himself said after the game, “I didn’t think about the batsman’s strengths, I stuck to mine.”
That attitude paid off. Hayden scratched one to Dhoni to get Ishant off the mark.

Then, Ricky Ponting, who has been the best batsman around for some years now, was done in – again – by one that exploded off good length and went to slip.

It brought back memories of the 1996-97 Test series in Australia when Glenn McGrath made Brian Lara look like a fool again and again through the series.

The quick wickets allowed India to settle down and helped Ishant get into rhythm. He added Andrew Symonds and Stuart Clark to his kitty. After his first two overs read 0-24, the next 7.1 read 4-14.

NDTV 24×7 is available in the US through DirecTv. The combination is very good as NDTV 24×7 is India’s best news channel and DirecTv’s signal is never down.

Mig-27 aircraft crashes in Jalpaiguri

January 31, 2008

I am living in the US since almost 2 years. While I was in India every week there I use to hear about a Mig crashing. The faulty planes in our defense systems had stirred a controversy regarding bribed officials. The safety standards were improvised upon by the Indian government but a recent Mig-27 crash questions the efforts. I saw the coverage on NDTV 24×7.

A MIG-27 ground attack aircraft crashed in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Thursday injuring a boy but the pilot ejected to safety.

The MIG-27 crashed near Chinchula tea garden at 12:40 pm, Superintendent of Police, Jalpaiguri, S Tripurari told PTI.

An IAF spokesman in Delhi said that the aircraft was on a routine training mission and crashed 10.2 km east of the Hashimara airbase.

The pilot, Jasbir Singh, parachuted to safety, Tripurari said, adding that he was extended immediate help by the Army after he reached the ground.

Govt to forge new strategy for N-deal

January 28, 2008

As delay continues to plague operationalisation of the Indo-US nuclear deal, the US on Monday favoured completion of the processes involved in it during the tenure of the Bush administration, failing which ”practical problems” can push it to 2010.

I saw the coverage on NDTV 24*7 available in the US through DirecTv. DirecTv is doing a great job by providing Indian Channels in the US. Especially NDTV because it is the best news channel in India.

Here is an extract from the coverage and analysis by NDTV:

When the UPA and the Left meet next on the nuke deal, the government will put on the table:

  • A framework agreement that has just been concluded with France
  • the MOU signed with the Russians
  • The crucial pledge by the Chinese
  • And the statements supporting civil nuclear cooperation by Britain, Brazil and South Africa

But will the Left be convinced in what is essentially a change in political rhetoric?
