Jubilant Mumbai Indians upset Delhi Daredevils

May 5, 2008

The Mumbai Indians finally did it on Sunday evening and achieved their second win of the DLF Indian Premier League as they thrashed the Delhi Daredevils by 29 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. So far, this is the biggest upset of the tournament. The lowest placed team in the IPL table dethroned the Daredevils from the top spot.

Defending a total of 162 runs on a flat wicket of DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai Indians knew they had to come off good with the ball and their bowlers did not disappoint them. Delhi Daredevils, for the first time in the tournament, were all out while chasing.

Stand-in captain Shaun Pollock led from the front and lived up to his reputation of a terrific all-rounder. His captaincy deserves special accolades too, as he put in all his international experience to the hilt and shepherded his side to win. He, undoubtedly, was the Man of the Match.

Knight Riders tame Deccan Chargers

Kolkata Knight Riders carried their winning momentum from Bangalore to their home ground as they beat Deccan Chargers by 5 wickets to record their second win of the Indian Premier League at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Deccan Chargers, defending a total of 110, started off well with the ball as they had Knight Riders 21/3 at one stage. But David Hussey had other plans as he played anchor’s knock and guided his team to victory. He understood the nature of the pitch well and didn’t let his aggressive instinct take charge. However, he did hit three long sixes in the death overs to take his team closer to the target.

Chak de India!!

April 11, 2008

I saw the news on NDTV 24×7 about the Indian women’s hockey team, which is en route for the Olympic qualifiers in Kazan. The men’s hockey team’s performance turned out to be a disaster, that rests the pride of the national game on the women shoulders. The movie, Chak de India had a typical ending but this the kind of result hockey followers are dreaming about.

I am not sure if the match will be shown live but I will definitely watch the coverage on NDTV 24×7.

There’s an almost frantic feel to the way the women’s hockey team is preparing for the Beijing qualifiers in Kazan. After an intense three-week training camp in Lucknow, the ladies arrived in New Delhi for a day en route to Russia, and decided to put in one more training session. The pressure is mounting after the men failed to make it to the Games for the first time in 80 years.

I will update this blog as soon as NDTV 24×7 updates me. The India-centric news channel is available in the US through DirecTV. The satellite TV provider offers an array of Indian channels in HD.

India made an embarrassing start to the Ahmedabad Test. The team folded up for 76 runs in just 20 overs – all in the first session of play against South Africa on Wednesday.

South Africa’s openers replied positively. Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie erased the deficit in the second session of play before Smith fell leg-before to Sreesanth for 34.

Irfan Pathan, brought in for the injured Sachin Tendulkar, top-scored for India with 21 as Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini and Morne Morkel wreaked havoc

Sehwag betters Dravid, Sachin in ranking

April 2, 2008

Virender Sehwag’s career best 319 against South Africa catapulted him to the 12th spot in the ICC Test Rankings, making him the highest ranked Indian in the batting chart. I saw the news on NDTV 24×7.

Sehwag, whose triple ton was the fastest in Test history, jumped 13 places to 12th spot after a massive 17 per cent rise in his rating that saw him leapfrogging compatriots Rahul Dravid (13th), Sachin Tendulkar (15th) and VVS Laxman (18th).

On current form, Sehwag has a realistic chance of returning to the top 10. He is within touching distance of 10th place Kevin Pietersen of England who is just behind ninth-placed Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies.

Tata inks JLR deal with Ford

March 26, 2008

Homegrown auto major Tata Motors has clinched the Jaguar and Land Rover deal estimated to be valued between $2-2.5 billion.

According to sources close to the development, the deal was signed last evening and is estimated to have cost the Tatas between $2-2.5 billion.

The deal has taken almost nine months to finalise as both Ford and Tata and their financiers sought to iron out issues seen as crucial to the future of the two British marques.

It is expected to cover long-term supply of engines to both brands from Ford.

During the race for JLR, in which India’s Mahindra & Mahindra was also in running for sometime, Tatas gained the crucial support from Unite – main trade union of Jaguar and Land Rover.
